The Will of William Elliott, Rockbridge County, Virginia Will Book 1, p. 494. This will was submitted to the Court of Rockbridge County on July 7, 1795.

William & his wife Margaret attended the Tinkling Spring Church.

Along about 1730 there were a large number of Scotch-Irish families who came to America & most of them entered by the way of the Port of Philadelphia. The path of migration was by way of Chester, Lancaster & Cumberland Counties, Pennsylvania & down the Valley of the Shenandoah. Some of the families traveled the entire road while others stayed in Lancaster County. However the Campbells, McElroys, McDowells, Grahams, Gays, Kinkeads, Elliotts, Stevensons & many other of the families who helped to settle the Valley of Virginia came in about this time & by this route.

According to “Genealogies of Kentucky Families, From the Register of the Kentucky Historical Society,” Vol. 2, :The Families Kinkead, Stephenson, Garrett, Martin & Dunlap,” Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc. 1981, p. 762. “…the first group of families to move into the Valley of Virginia came there in 1744. The group that settled that year on the Calf Pasture …” included William Elliott.

Kyle J. Wear wrote – “Archibald Elliott, son of William Elliot Sr., moved to Anson Co., NC (present day Chester Co., SC) between 1748 & 1758 – his father is given power of attorney on March 18, 1758 to sell his property on the Jackson River in Augusta Co., VA.”

According to M. Elaine Elliott – Archibald moved to North Carolina after an Indian attack in Augusta County. Archibald’s wife was a sister to the wife of John Elliott (who is possibly another son of William Sr’s., though unproven at this time.)

John H. Gwathmey, “Historical Register of Virginians in the Revolution; Soldier-Sailors-Marines; 1775-1783,” Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., Baltimore, 1996 has the following entries:

“Elliot, Archibald, of Augusta, E” (the E denotes that the entry was originally found in the “Index of the Revolutionary records in the Virginia State Archives,” compiled by Dr. H. J. Eckenrode in 1912 & 1914)., p 252.

He married JEAN MCCLURE Jun 1770 in Rockbridge County, VA, daughter of SAMUEL MCCLURE and MARY KELSO. She was born Abt. 1749 in Augusta County, VA, and died Bef. 1802 in Woodford County, KY.

Rickbridge County, VA Deed Book B, pp. 19-20 – Robert & Jean Elliott sold their land in Virginia to James Kenady as witnessed by John Gay, James Elliott, Jacob Martin & William Kenady at a court held for Rockbridge County, Jan. 6th. 1789.

According to D. M. Elliott – Robert moved to Woodford County, KY before the birth of the two youngest children.

Robert witnessed the signing of Thomas Ratliff’s will in Woodford County on Aug. 18, 1796, & the will was proved by Robert’s oath in Woodford County Court on Jan. 3, 1797.

D. M. Elliott refers to her a “Jennie” McClure.

Date of her death is based on Woodford County, KY court records stating that her younger children, James, Robert, Jane, Elizabeth, & Alexander were orphaned by the death of their father, Robert in 1802.

Notes for ROBERT ELLIOTT:
Robert fought the British & Indians through Northwest Ohio in the War of 1812. He moved his family to Indiana in 1816. He was apprenticed as a boy to Lewis Castleman to learn the tanner’s trade. He later moved (what became) Dayton, Ohio & startd a tannery. Robert & Eliza were married by A. Chitwood.

Marriage sources – The Miami Valley Ohio Genealogical Index records Robert Elliott’s marriage to Mary Logan in 1807 in Montgomery County. This same index also records Robert’s wedding to Martha Logan in 1823 in Montgomery County. Robert Elliott’s War of 1812 Pension records give the date & location of his marriage to Mary Logan as April 7, 1807, Montgomery County, OH.

Woodford County, KY Court Records (p. 412) for June Court 1802 – “On motion, James Elliott & Robert Elliott infant orphans of Robert Elliott dec’d came into Court & with their approbation made choice of James Martin as their guardian. . .”

According to D. M. Elliott, Robert Elliott apprenticed as a boy to Lewis Castleman, a tanner. It is not clear whether Robert’s apprenticeship to Lewis Castleman began before or after his father’s death. His apprenticeship most likely ended when he reached age twenty-one in 1805. It is probably about this time that Robert moved to what is now Dayton, Montgomery County, OH, where he started a tannery & where he met & married Mary Logan on April 7, 1807.

According to his War of 1812 pension records, Robert was drafted into military service on Aug. 23, 1812. He served as a corporal under Major George Adam’s command in Captain Luce’s Company, first regiment, fifth brigade, first division, at Fort Greenville, OH, where he was honorably discharged on Feb. 23, 1813. According to his pension records, Robert saw no action, was not engaged in any special engagements, but did do duty as a scout.

He appears to have received 80 acres of bounty land in the late 1850s as a result of his military service in 1812. He was also granted a military pension in 1871.

Robert was a founder of what came to be known as Monroe Presbyterian Church in 1830.

The first known record of Robert Elliott in Indiana (at this time) is in James Vawter’s list of taxable property owners in Jefferson County for the year 1816 – Charles M. Franklin, “Indiana Territorial Pioneer Records 1801-1820,” Vol. 2, Heritage House, Indianapolis, 1985, p. 36.

Notes for MARY LOGAN:
Mary Logan died giving birth in about 1822, the infant died as well. Robert then married Mary Logan’s sister, Martha Logan, in Montgomery County, OH in 1823. Martha died a few years later. They had no children. He then married Marth Miller. They had no children. – D. M. Elliott paper.

In the 1880 Federal Census Mary’s son, James, gave his mother’s birthplace as pennsylvania.

They were called out at frequent intervals during the first three years of the Civil War. In 1861 they were hurried to Madison to be taken to Louisville to repel a threatened attack on that city, but there wer no guns for them. In 1862 they spent six weeks at Indianapolis guarding prisoners. Later in 1862 they were camped at Hanover Landing for some weeks. The Ohio River was very low & it was feared that General Kirby Smith would cross over there – From a paper by D. M. Elliott.

Robert worked with the Baxter brothers on the Underground Railroad. James Baxter along with Robert Elliott headed Station #2 between Rykers Ridge & Decatur County – Southeastern Indiana’s Underground Railroad Routes & Operations, by Diana Perrine Coon, State Dept. Of Natural Resources, 2001, pp. 46-7.

From the Archives: Twice Saved
May 24, 2006

In a tragic twist of fate, hundred of Union soldiers survived the dead line at Andersonville only to fall victim to the worst maritime disaster in american history. A Wabash man was among them.

He was Captain J. Walter Elliot, Class of 1858. Twenty-eight years old when President Lincoln first called for volunteers, the young lawyer sold his practice & became a captain in the 44th. United States Colored Troops. Leading African American soldiers into battle, Elliott was captured September 7, 1864, & sent to Andersonville. He was released from the prison camp near the end of the War & transported to Vicksburg, Mississippi, where he encounted another Wabash man – Benjamin Marshall Mills, Class of 1868, the son of the College’s first professor, Caleb Mills. Benjamin wrote to his mother of their meeting in a letter dated April 19, 1865: He is the only officer of the Black Troops that I know of among the prisoners. He has seen a hard time but is ready to help with it until the war is over . . . Thinks he will go to Crawfordsville after he is exchanged if he can get a leave of absence, & then you will have a chance of hearing of the horrors of prison life.

On April 24, the steamboat Sultana arrived at Vicksburg. The boat was legally licensed to carry 376 persons, including crew. It left Vicksburg with between 2,000 & 2,300 passengers, including Captain Elliot. Early in the morning of April 27, the Sultana exploded & burned, killing more than 1,700 men, women, & children.

Captain Elliott lamented not being able to help more of the victims, but, in fact, he did his part & more. Though injured in the explosion & fire, he managed to organize a contingent of prisoner survivors of the Sultana disaster from Indiana & Ohio, traveling with them to Cairo, Illinois, Columbus, Ohio, & finally to Indianapolis. He did not rest until his fellow survivors of Andersonville & the Sultana were safely home.
